Here we gather together the links etc. that you for things you need to do via HMRC

Register for a new Agent Services Account

This is a new account that you need to create at the UK Government Gateway and is in addition to services you have been using before 1st April 2019. After this date you will effectively be using two sets of credentials - new credentials for VAT Return submissions and old credentials for other services e.g. self assessment etc.

Register for a new Agent Services Account by clicking here (takes you to the HMRC website).

HMRC will send you a confirmation email. You can save this in your practice page in your Settings.

Note: if you've already signed up for the Trust Registration Service (TRS) you may have an Agent Services Account already.

Check for MTD-Compatible Software

HMRC has published a list of MTD-compatible software solutions here (takes you to the HMRC website).

Note: you will need to authorise your software supplier to connect with HMRC on your behalf. This should be supported in the software itself.

Obtaining authorisation from a client to submit VAT Returns

If you already submit VAT Returns on behalf of a client, then there is nothing you need to do other than check that they are linked to your Agent Services Account at HMRC.

If this is the first time you are submitting VAT Returns on behalf of a client, then you must obtain their authorisation. This is not a signed document.

  1. Go to your Agent Services Account at HMRC
  2. Add the details of your client
  3. Copy and send the authorisation link generated (by HMRC) to your client
  4. The link is only valid for 14 days so make sure they click on it before time is up!
  5. Go to your Agent Services Account at HMRC and check the client appears in your list of linked clients

That's everything. Best of luck!
